Breaking down the curriculum in Queensland

Years 7 “9

The curriculum in these year levels is dictated by the Queensland Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework (QCAR), and sees students broadening their knowledge and skills through a general education. Schools introduce students to the full range of subjects in core areas including QCAR's Essential Learnings which ensures that students will know what their interests and abilities are before they start making the choices open to them in Years 10, 11 and 12. Each school also offers additional learning opportunities and electives to complement the interests and needs of their students.

Year 10

Once the end of schooling for many young people, Year 10 is now seen as a ˜preliminary QCE year' with the option of taking units that credit towards the QCE including VET studies and preliminary, enrichment and advanced courses. Talented Year 10 students may also be accelerated into core subjects normally offered in Years 11 and 12 and begin banking credit towards their core courses. At the end of Year 10, students play an active role in planning their senior years by creating a Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan that maps out a pathway for Years 11 and 12 and beyond.

Years 11 and 12

Queensland students typically graduate with a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). A Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA) may also be completed by students with learning impairments or difficulties.
