Barker’s Junior School from Pre-K to Year 6 is an environment where all children are encouraged, challenged and engaged in learning and co-curricular experiences appropriate to children of their age.
The Junior School aims to develop learners who are knowledgeable, caring, open-minded, balanced, principled, reflective, communicators, thinkers, risk-takers and inquirers. It is these ten attributes that we believe are important in their learning journey. In 2019, the Junior School became an International Baccalaureate School.
The introduction of Inquiry Learning in the Junior School has its focus on developing young learners and preparing them to succeed. Hour blocks of literacy and numeracy in each class are provided every day. Each year-group incorporates units of inquiry into their teaching and learning programs. These units focus on the development of knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and actions particularly in the areas of science and technology, geography and history.
Developing students who are able to question, investigate, analyse and synthesise information, and then communicate their understanding is a key learning goal in the Junior School.
Every Barker student enjoys the benefits of a broad, well-rounded co-curricular program that includes creative and performing arts, sport, STEAM, debating, service and leadership development. Our focus is on providing the best possible co-curricular programs to complement the learning that occurs in the classroom.
For our Junior School students, compulsory Saturday sport commences from Year 3. All students participate in skill development sessions every week, with a gross motor skills program for our youngest members of the Junior School. Our Pre-K to Year 3 students enjoy participating in programs that focus on developing their core fundamental movement skills. These are the building blocks for more complex and specialised skills our students will need throughout their lives to participate in different games and sports.
Barker has one of the largest school ensemble programs in Australia. The school employs excellent instrumental and vocal teachers and our Junior School students are involved in the music program from Pre-K with lessons by experienced music staff every week. A compulsory instrumental program commences in Year 2 and continues until Year 6.
