About Yarra Valley Grammar

Established in the heart of Melbourne’s east in 1966 and set on a spacious 29-hectare campus, Yarra Valley Grammar overlooks the Yarra Valley and the picturesque Dandenong Ranges. Students excel under the guidance of great teachers who love what they do and seek to inspire them to strive for excellence.

Outstanding VCE Results

In 2016, our VCE students have once again achieved some excellent and well deserved results. Our outstanding VCE results included:
  • A top ATAR of 99.80
  • Four students achieved an ATAR of 99 or above
  • The median ATAR was 82.05
  • Median study score was 34
  • More than 35 per cent of students achieved results in the top 10 per cent in Victoria
“The VCE provides a pathway into tertiary studies and positions in the workplace. Our students have once again gained access into a broad range of preferred pathways after school and we wish them all the very best in this new stage in their lives,” says Dr Mark Merry, Principal.

Yarra Valley Grammar’s broad curriculum is responsive to individual student needs, with extra opportunities for enrichment and support. Key learning areas include English, mathematics, science, art and design, business studies, design technology, humanities, ICT, languages including Chinese, Indonesian and French, physical education and sport/outdoor education.

Our students also enjoy a diverse range of extracurricular opportunities, including academic, sporting and special interest clubs, debating, drama productions, private tuition in singing and musical instruments, band, orchestra and ensembles, community service opportunities,
state and national academic competitions (mathematics, humanities and science); and specialist enrichment and support programs.

LEVAVI Program

This newly established program has been developed to provide enrichment, enhancement and extension opportunities for Year 7 and 8 students in English, mathematics, humanities and science. Students are invited to participate in the program based on a range of criteria including their exhibited passion for the subject(s). Extra-curricular extension opportunities are also available for Year 6, 7, 8 and 9 students.

Early Learning Centre

Children are learning from the time they enter the world and from the time our youngest students enter Yarra Valley Grammar, we work in partnership with parents to continue to foster that sense of wonder and awe. Kindergarten programs are available in our Early Learning Centre for both three- and four-year--olds. All ELC sessions run from 8.45 am to 3.00 pm and are available in various day block combinations, with before and after school care also available.

Our teaching staff are degree qualified, early years trained educators and we offer a play-based curriculum. In 2016, our Centre was awarded Exceeding the National Quality Standard by ACECQA (The Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority) across all seven areas assessed.
Our ELC students learn in a purpose-built centre, opened in 2010, and also have full use of the School’s other facilities including the swimming and wading pools, sports complex, music school, Performing Arts Centre and resource centre (library).

Message from the Principal

At Yarra Valley Grammar we want teachers who are experts in their field. This includes having a passion for the subjects they are teaching because this passion will be passed on to their students. The second element to look for is the teacher who genuinely loves to work with young people. It is the teacher who can establish a great working relationship with students and colleagues who is the greatest asset to any school. They are the ones who encourage the reluctant, celebrate success, include everyone in the room and inject some humour into their work. Students come to their classes because they want to learn and because the teacher is truly interested in their wellbeing and their learning. My role as principal is to help create an environment where the best teachers want to come to teach; where they can continue to develop their skills and where they in turn instil in their students the confidence to achieve.

Dr Mark Merry
