Established in 1989, Alphington Grammar School is a non-denominational, coeducational independent school offering three-year-old Early Learning to Year 12. Providing a unique and idyllic learning environment, we pride ourselves on our commitment to supporting our students to strive for excellence in all that they do.
Our vision is underpinned by new areas of learning, enhanced curriculum offerings and facilities that will continue to deliver quality education to generations to come. Our goal is to provide more students with the skills and attributes to excel while developing strong, independent, critical, and creative thinking skills while they navigate the digital world around them.
The Library and Education Resource Centre is at the heart of our school. It comprises multiple zones designed to deliver targeted and unique learning experiences. The Multifunction Room, equipped with a smartboard, has been designed to accommodate class groups, guest authors as well as space for quiet reading. The White Zone, complete with writeable walls, provides a great space for students to brainstorm and collaborate in their learning. Sensory Zones have been created to provide quiet reading areas for students. Spaces throughout the library cater for individual study, booths for group work and study zones. The Primary Zone delivers a space that is visually engaging and stimulating, with face-out displays and little nooks that provide our younger students with an inviting place to read.
Our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) facilities showcase our commitment to providing innovative educational learning spaces integrated with state-of-the-art facilities with access to educators from around the world. This centre meets the needs of both our primary and secondary students and extends their STEM opportunities in modern, purpose-built facilities.
As an ELC – 12 school, we believe that the development of skills at all stages of life will inspire curiosity, creativity, and entrepreneurship. We have highly able students enrolled in accelerated programs such as our Primary based ASPIRE, the Secondary School ALPHA Initiative — a program for highly abled Year 7–9 students. Early-entry VCE units exist for students who are currently working on projects of their own or partnering with university academics to solve community, humanitarian, and global issues.
Experiential Learning – Our Flagship Gateways Program
Alphington Grammar is committed to developing active and informed global citizens. Our commitment to global education includes the Global Gateways Program, where all Year 9 and 10 students at Alphington Grammar School experience powerful personal growth, develop cross-cultural understanding, and become active global citizens.
We believe that internationalism and cross-cultural understanding is integral to developing informed global citizens. Global awareness, including the study of diverse cultures, histories, and languages, is integrated into our teaching and learning programs across all year levels, from Prep to Year 12.
Our compulsory Gateways Program is an opportunity for our Years 9 and 10 students to travel either internationally or interstate to broaden their cross-cultural experiences, in an experiential way. Experiential learning activities gives students considerable opportunity for personal development, self-directed learning, and the development of deeper problem-solving skills. The program aims to further develop students’ emotional intelligence and character through a strong sense of cultural awareness, community, and a deeper understanding of the contributions our students will make to a globally sustainable future.
Each year our students choose either an international or Australian cultural experience.
In alternating years, our students have the choices between a four-week study tour of China, Sicily, and Greece, or a two-week study tour of Central Australia including Coober Pedy, Uluru, Kings Canyon and Alice Springs. In the alternate year students choose between a two-week study tour of Vietnam, or a ten-day study tour of the Top End, including Darwin, Kakadu, and Litchfield National Park.
Wellbeing at Alphington
At Alphington Grammar School, we view caring for your child’s social and emotional health and wellbeing as essential to developing a growth mindset and experiencing success.
We believe students learn best in an environment where their social, emotional, and physical wellbeing is nurtured. Our close-knit community is a strong feature of our school, and we pride ourselves on the strong relationships that develop in our learning community.
A variety of leadership opportunities on offer within the school allow for our students to grow and develop public speaking and leadership skills. Our House System underpins the pillars of our Student Care and Support Structures. Our Psychology and Exceptionality Team provide comprehensive interventions where needed.
We strive to ensure our students feel confident in undertaking the challenges of a changing landscape and know where to turn to for the support they need as they navigate their school years.
At Alphington Grammar School, learning is more than facts and figures. We are committed to preparing future adults, who excel in their chosen path, and capable of navigating the world they encounter with purpose, creativity, integrity, respect, and compassion.
