Box Hill Senior Secondary College in Mont Albert North is a co-educational Senior Secondary College for students in Years 9–12. The school offers a full range of academic and applied learning programs such as VCE, VETiS, VCE VM and Headstart (school-based apprenticeships) programs. These programs include trade training courses, music, performing arts, STEM, e-sports, the arts, entrepreneurship, pre-apprenticeships, industry partnerships and media. The resources and facilities in the school also allow students to gain valuable ‘industry’ experience and knowledge, which better prepares them for their post-secondary pathways. There is a wide range of ‘industry standard’ workshops and associated technology that allow students to get first-hand experience in some of the essential and practical elements involved in potential future career pathways occupations.
The curriculum allows a breadth of opportunities across all learning areas, with Years 9 and 10 students having a wide range of elective subjects to choose from, apart from their core studies. These electives provide all students with an opportunity to explore and develop their understanding of Senior (Years 11 and 12) academic and applied learning pathways, which is also built into and supported by our college mentor Advocacy program.
The college was also the first in Australia to pioneer the introduction of specialist Sports Academies and has a range of peak sporting body and related industry experience to underpin the program areas of Basketball, AFL, AFLW and Tennis. These programs support student interests and needs, while also providing an educational pathway into post-secondary school options such as the U.S. College and University system. Throughout the school’s recent history, many of our students have been successful in gaining student-athlete scholarships to multiple universities and colleges throughout the United States.
The college is committed to providing an academic learning program where high expectations, rigour and student success are essential elements of the Box Hill Senior program. Our student-centred approach allows students to be recognised and valued as members of our learning community while also helping students to successfully prepare for the future. The college also offers a range of local, national and international tours, camps and learning excursions to provide ‘real world’ learning opportunities for all students across the curriculum.
