Good Schools Spotlight: St Mary's Anglican Girls' School
At St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School, we are all about girls. We have a proud tradition of providing a rich and rewarding education for girls and place great value on the development of the whole person as we facilitate the academic and holistic growth of our students, in a caring and inclusive community.
Discover St Mary's
St Mary’s is a non-selective, leading Western Australian independent day and boarding girls’ school located in Karrinyup, in the northern suburbs of Perth. Set in 16 hectares of landscaped gardens and natural bushland, the school is only a five-minute walk to the ocean.
The school also operates our own outdoor education facility, set in natural bushland in the heart of the Margaret River region.
With a student population of over 1,400 girls from Kindergarten to Year 12 and WA’s largest boarding house with 185 boarders, we strive to ensure that each student is nurtured as an individual and feels she is an important member of the St Mary’s family.
Wellbeing and pastoral care
With a whole-school wellbeing program, Bonds and Bridges, St Mary’s recognises and respects the individual needs of each girl, fostering a caring and supportive environment supported by a highly-skilled pastoral care team.
Academic profile
While we are a non-selective school academically, we have developed a strong academic tradition, ranking among the top schools in WA.
Our class of 2019 demonstrated overall strength and depth across the entire Year 12 cohort. Standout results include a median ATAR of 91.15 (against a state average of 81) and a total of 124 School Curriculum and Standards Authority Awards.
St Mary’s vocational pathway, Elevate, provides the opportunity for students to gain a nationally recognised qualification and Endorsed Workplace Learning Units over Years 11 and 12. In 2019 the program delivered excellent outcomes for our girls, including the AustralianSuper Westscheme Division Award for Excellence in VET.
Co-curricular
St Mary’s runs a diverse co-curricular program that enriches students’ lives and encourages the development of both specific skills and the all-round person. Students can participate in activities such as sport, outdoor education, surfing, dive programs, music, visual arts, dance, drama, debating, public speaking, technology and entrepreneurial programs, intrastate, interstate and overseas study tours and exchange opportunities, volunteering and community service.
These activities strengthen the development of life skills, such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication and self-confidence.
St Mary’s also works closely with our brother school, Hale School. We call our engaged brother-sister school relationship ‘the best of both worlds’. Our girls learn in an academic environment focused on how they learn best, while participating in an engaging co-curricular and social program with the boys at Hale, which enables them to develop meaningful, respectful and collaborative relationships with boys from a young age.
