Things to do these school holidays

Keep the kids entertained these holidays with our guide to some of the best things happening around the country.

Melbourne

Melbourne is full of great things to do these holidays. Take the kids to Phillip Island for the Penguin Parade Tour, head to Chadstone for the Legoland Discovery Centre, or learn something new. For the budget conscious, there are also plenty of free things on offer including craft workshops at Dandenong Markets and the interactive displays at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).

Adelaide

Adelaide has a wide range of activities in the city, with the South Australian Maritime Museum in Port Adelaide, the SA Circus Centre’s holiday programs, and Adelaide and Monarto Zoos celebrating NAIDOC Week. Further afield, southern Australia has many attractions, including Grampians National Park, Naracoorte Caves — South Australia’s only World Heritage site, and Mount Gambier.

Sydney

These holidays the Sydney Opera House hosts The Hunting of the Snark, Bondi has been turned into a winter wonderland for The Bondi Winter Magic Festival, and the Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour is home to the Deep Sea Sensorium. Out of the city, Booderee National Park and Aranyani Bison Farm provide the opportunity to escape to nature.

Brisbane

Queensland’s Museum and Gallery of Modern Art are both open these school holidays and give parents the chance to share some art and history with their children. Elsewhere, Daisy Hill Koala Reserve is a great place to have a picnic, bush walk and do a little animal spotting. Lego lovers can head to the Lego Buildroom in Capalaba, while star watchers will love the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium.

Perth

The West Australian Ballet is hosting Drop-In Workshops for aspiring dancers, while Crown Perth is home to DIY Doughnut Decorating. Dinosaur enthusiasts will be excited for the Dino World exhibition down at Stockland Riverton. The Spare Parts Puppet Theatre is hosting a series of holiday workshops in Fremantle, with the cost of attendance also including tickets to their latest production.
